Story 1
Long Barn, California
Long Barn, California, was a wagon stop along the Sonora Pass during the 1800s gold rush era. An apple orchard was planted next to the Long Barn so travelers could have fresh food. The Long Barn Lodge was built in the 1920s, with a restaurant, rooms, bar, and entertainment for mountain vacationers. In 2002, the historic lodge, old lodge, restaurant, game room, and bar burned down; without insurance, they were not rebuilt.

Pinecrest, California
Pinecrest, California, was used by the Me-Wuk as a trading ground. Before the California Gold Rush of 1848, early bands of native Me-Wuk were the first inhabitants of Pinecrest. As the Gold Rush began, the Me-Wuk were treated with racism, violent displacement, and broken treaties by early settlers. Pinecrest Lake was originally called Strawberry Flat because of the wild strawberries that once grew there.

Strawberry, Tuolumne County, California
Strawberry, Tuolumne County, California, inspired the small tourist town of Strawberry in Rockstar Games’ 2018 video game Red Dead Redemption 2. Strawberry was also thought to be the original home of Heath Barkley, the fictional character in the 1960s television western The Big Valley, starring Lee Majors and Barbara Stanwyck. However, Heath’s hometown was more likely the mining town of Strawberry Valley, whose post office opened in 1850. Strawberry itself is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Tuolumne County, located on California State Route 108 10 miles northeast of Long Barn.

Baker Highway Maintenance Station is located at 33950 California State Route 108. Built in 1931, the remote compound was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

Before you go
The segment over Sonora Pass is closed in winter, with gates on both sides of the summit. Wikipedia puts the closure at often November through as late as May. Check Caltrans QuickMap before you leave.
The high country east of Strawberry has few documented places, so Guide is quiet there. Ask is the better tool for the peaks and meadows you can see.
Yonder or a curated tour?
A curated audio tour uses a scripted narrator and goes deep on a few famous stops. Yonder covers CA 108 from the foothills to US 395 and answers questions in Ask. Its stories come from public sources such as Wikipedia, so on a wilderness road like this one it has few to tell.
How curated tours and Yonder differQuestions about this drive
What does Yonder narrate on Highway 108?
In our simulated drive at 35 mph, Guide told stories about Long Barn, Pinecrest, Strawberry and the Baker Highway Maintenance Station, a compound built in 1931 to keep the high road open. Earlier drives found only the maintenance station.
Why so few stories on the pass?
Guide needs a documented place near the road. The pass has little in the sources Guide could reach during our tests, so it stayed quiet.
Can I ask Yonder about a lake or peak near the summit?
Yes. Ask Mode answers questions such as “What’s that peak?” using your location and nearby public data.
