Curated audio tours vs Yonder

A curated audio tour is written and recorded by people for a specific route, so it can be deep, ordered and polished. Yonder generates short stories from public sources for wherever you happen to be, and answers questions on the way. Tours win on craft along their route. Yonder wins on reach and on being able to ask.

What a curated tour gives you

A tour author chooses what matters on a route, puts the stories in order, and hires a voice. The result can build, with an early story setting up a later one. If you’re driving one road once, the author’s judgment is hard to replace.

What Yonder gives you

Yonder doesn’t need anyone to have written your road. Guide narrates places near your route as it finds something worth saying, and Ask answers the question you have right now. Each story names its source, whether Wikipedia, OpenStreetMap, GeoNames or the Historical Marker Database, so you can read further.

The tradeoff is consistency. A generated story is only as good as the sources behind it, and a road with little written about it gets few stories.

Choosing

Take a curated tour for a famous route you’ll drive once, particularly if it crosses dead zones. Take Yonder for everyday roads, detours and long highway stretches between the famous routes. Many people will want both.

What curated tours do better

  • Craft. A person who knows the route can order stories, build themes and cut what doesn’t fit.
  • Reliability on a set route. The same stories play every time, and quality doesn’t depend on what the public sources happen to cover.
  • Offline listening, where the app offers downloads.
  • Performance. A skilled human narrator brings emphasis and warmth that generated narration can’t match yet.

Questions

Are Yonder’s stories written by people?

No. Yonder generates each story from the sources it names. The sources themselves, such as Wikipedia articles and roadside marker texts, were written by people.

Is a curated tour more accurate?

Not automatically. An author can make errors too. Yonder shows its source on every card so you can check a claim.

Can I use Yonder on a route that has a tour?

Yes. They’re separate apps, so you can play a tour on its route and keep Yonder for the roads around it.
